Synopsis:
Layers: Introspection is the second act of César Abreu’s three-part dance film Layers, a work that explores the journey of self-acceptance through Ritual, Introspection, and Redemption. While the trilogy as a whole navigates the tension between cultural expectations, identity, and resilience, this second chapter narrows its gaze inward.
In Introspection, the dancers confront the weight of memory and the hidden scars carried beneath the surface. The stage darkens, the music fractures into dissonant echoes, and the performers move with raw urgency—shedding layers of armor to reveal fragile truths. Improvisation becomes both a language and a release, as each body wrestles with vulnerability and the echoes of personal and collective trauma.
Created in collaboration with Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón and French visual artist Roxane Revon, Layers: Introspection stands as the emotional heart of the trilogy. It is a meditation on silence, survival, and the difficult beauty of facing oneself. While the full work progresses toward Redemption, this act pauses in the turbulent space between pain and healing—where honesty itself becomes a radical gesture.
