Logline:
A dancer embodies every generation of her islands, journeying from ruin to river to shoreline, until she raises the machete her ancestors carried, and answers the cry to rise.
Synopsis:
At Hacienda La Fe, a sugar plantation shuttered in 1942, at sunrise a lone dancer wakes into the echo of the land’s memory. She is not one girl but every generation of Borikén folded into a single body, ancestor and descendant at once. At Guajataca she moves through the old railroad tunnel, cut to haul cane to American ships, where an elder presses a machete into her hands before disappearing into the dark. She emerges at Playa Guajataca as the sun drops, the primo drum answering her every step, call and response, until documentary footage breaks the poem open: Mi Patria PR’s real fight against water rationing, blackouts, and displacement on an island being sold, meanwhile, as paradise. She raises the machete. “No somos pequeños, es que estamos de rodillas. ¡Levántemonos!”
