Through three generations, a filmmaker remembers his Puerto Rican great-grandfather’s legacy, revealing how Tangüis cotton transformed Peru. Today, memory, heritage, and tradition struggle to survive.
Synopsis:
“Cotton and Blood”, is a documentary that commemorates the life and legacy of Don Fermín Tangüis Uncal, an agricultural innovator, born in Puerto Rico, who, through his research in the cotton field and his selflessness, contributed to the economic development of Peru in the early and mid-20th century. Under this motto, the director (who is Don Fermin’s great-grandson) managed to reunite his great-grandfather’s descendants with the goal of creating, through photographs and firsthand oral accounts, a timeline that allows us to understand the events that this family has gone through over three generations in their attempt to respect the memory of Tangúis in a country and society as turbulent as Peru’s. This documentary also allows us to learn about the current state of the historical heritage of the city of Pisco after the 2007 earthquake and the precarious conditions that Tangüis cotton production faces today.
